Foundations of Community Engagement

Foundations of Community Engagement is a 1 semester hour five-week online, asynchronous course that equips students with essential skills for effective and responsible community-engaged work.

Through a mix of theory, case studies, and practical strategies, students learn how to engage community partners, assess local issues, and apply best practices in both academic and professional settings. The course is offered three times in the spring semester and is cross listed as URP:3002 and CSI:3002.

This course provides knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for meaningful community engagement. Through a combination of theoretical insights, case studies, and practical strategies, students can become better prepared to engage partners in community-engaged courses and future careers. Students will learn how to effectively engage with diverse community members, assess local issues, and incorporate best practices of community engagement into academic and professional work.

Co-designed and co-managed by the Office of Community Engagement (OCE) and the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC), this course offers students a flexible and valuable foundation for future community-engaged experiences.
