Iowa City community photos April 2016

The Bur Oak Land Trust hosted its annual meeting on April 22. One of the features of this event was the selection of the Bur Oak Land Trust Conservation Award. This award is given to an individual or organization that advances the mission and vision of the Trust consistent with its values. Mark Vitosh was named this year’s award recipient.  Mark regularly supports the Trust through his leadership as a property steward for the O’Mara-Newport Property, leading volunteer groups, educating and building awareness of Iowa’s woodlands. He has served on the board of directors for Bur Oak Land Trust and was part of the committee that assisted in changing its name from Johnson County Heritage Trust to Bur Oak Land Trust.

Jesse Smith, left, a Tate High Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports coach, and Kristina Brown, a guidance counselor at Tate, accepted an award on April 26 for the school’s work on positive school behaviors. Tate was one of 53 schools the Iowa Department of Education recognized, according to a news release from Tate.

Each year the Old Capitol Chorus presents the Big Wheel In The Arts award to a person who has contributed significantly to the performing arts.

On April 12, Tiffin Elementary fifth graders spent part of the day at the Iowa Capitol.  During their visit, State Senator Kevin Kinney, of Oxford, talked with them in the gallery overlooking the Iowa Senate Chamber.
